Exit rates are a funny old metric, the concept behind the exit rate is to identify leakage from your web pages on your website, the pages where people leave your site, sounds great doesn't it? The only problem is, is that everyone has to leave your site at some point, because unlike bounce rate which measures a user arrives and goes no further, users could quite easily be finding and digesting the right content and then leaving, a sales thank you page is a great example, this page probably has a very exit rate and that would not necessarily be a bad problem.

when using exit rates you need to separate the good from the bad without overlaying your own opinions on the data.

The best way to utilise the exit rate is to use it to analyse specific goal funnel pages or to combine it with bounce rate as these show the "I came, I puked, I left".
